ABOUT THE BAND:
It's not actually a band. Just a woman and a computer. Kristine Montgomery is the evil mastermind behind Mad Girl, its chief (only) songwriter and singer. If Trent Reznor can be Nine Inch Nails and Alison Sudol can be A Fine Frenzy, then ...
However, much credit belongs to producer/sound engineer Neil Lee Griffin, who has massaged and/or sledgehammered Kristine's raw arrangements into something more polished and listenable. He is also responsible for the awesome guitar solos, bass riffs, and ganjo plucking featured on Beauty & Menace.
THE HISTORY:
Kris grew up taking dance lessons but began writing songs at sixteen. She wrote some of her first -- "Queen of Carthage," "Stranded," "Ethers," and "Romeo Lines" -- on a second-hand bass guitar in the privacy of her bedroom. She never, however, sang into a hairbrush.
"No Big Deal" was written at age twenty-five, and "We Walk Among Them" and "Stone by Stone" in late 2020 at the age of none-of-your-business. So the debut album Beauty & Menace is essentially a compilation of "greatest hits" spanning many moons and life stages.
WHAT TOOK SO LONG?
Because fear. Kris is the first to admit she's not a great singer or adept musician, and not even her own mother knew she wrote songs until now. But you know the adage about looking back and regretting what you didn't attempt? Yeah. So what the hell. Mad Girl Academy is, above all, about conquering fear and doing what you love.
